After School Program

In parts of our community many parents work multiple jobs, and their children do not have a safe, welcoming place to go after school. The Western Avenue story features many of these children, and they are some of the best and brightest kids around!  We're committed to giving them an excellent after school experience.

Western Avenue Community Center's After School Program provides a warm, positive, family atmosphere for 46 low-income, at risk children in grades K-5, weekdays from 3:30 - 5:30 PM.

In addition to providing positive social and emotional mentoring, the After School Program has two academic goals: 1) students are reading on grade level, and 2) students are promoted to the next grade level. Our program offers our precious children a quality, learning-oriented environment that includes:

  • Smiles and hugs from warm, caring adults who form meaningful relationships with our children.
  • Healthy snacks.
  • Reading time (a minimum of 20 minutes daily with trained volunteer).
  • Homework time (individual assistance provided by trained volunteers).
  • Enrichment activities (dance, theatre, art, music, science projects, visits from the Children's Discovery Museum and the Miller Park Zoo, etc.)
  • Free time/recreation (open gym, board games, computers, crafts).
