WHY DRINKING WATER IS IMPORTANT

The body consists of over 70% water. Water is essential for optimal health.  All your tissues such as your muscles, organs and skin require water to function properly.  Health professionals agree that the body can rarely survive without water longer than several days. The following are some benefits of drinking water:

  • Carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells
  • Enables kidney and liver to function by flushing out waste products
  • Ensures adequate hydration for exercise
  • Helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients to make them accessible to the body
  • Helps prevent constipation
  • Lubricates the joints
  • Moistens tissue like the mouth and eyes
  • Prevents and relieves thirst
  • Regulates body temperature through perspiration

There are many benefits of drinking water, but the ones listed above are the most important.  Every day we lose water through breathing, perspiration, urine, and bowel movements. It is often recommended that we drink 8 glasses of water per day.  Research has shown that this requirement may vary depending on each individual’s activities and his or her diet. It is wise to drink enough to avoid feeling thirsty.  Water fills you up and has no calories.
