Programs for Youth
Western Avenue’s Youth Programs work to empower individuals. We want to give children opportunities to explore their community and create trusting and supportive relationships with our staff and peers. We offer a safe space for our community’s children to learn and have fun.

“More than Basketball” is the tag line we use to describe our youth sports program. We want to develop our young athletes with the fundamental skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The program also emphasizes character development, teaching valuable life skills such as communication, perseverance, and respect for others. With a focus on fun and development, the program aims to inspire kids to fall in love with the game of basketball and develop a lifelong passion for physical activity.
The baseball program is a fun and engaging way to introduce kids to the game of baseball. This program focuses on teaching fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, and hitting, while also emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship. The program also includes a curriculum that teaches kids about the importance of hard work, discipline, and respect for others. By the end the youth will have developed their skills and gained valuable life lessons that will benefit them both on and off the field.
View ProfileThe Willie Brown Summer Leadership program is named in honor of Willie Brown. He was heavily involved in activities at Western Avenue and went on to do a lot of great and phenomenal things with nonprofits and as well as had a successful career as a Senior Executive at State Farm. To honor the great legacy of Willie Brown and the impact that he has had in the Bloomington-Normal community this leadership program was formed. This program is based upon 5 pillars: responsibility, accountability, integrity, leadership, and service. This free program is offered to 30 students within the Bloomington – Normal school districts. The program includes enrichment programs, leadership classes and field trips that are both fun and educational. The participants that are a part of this program form new friendships and learn new skills throughout the program. This program is in partnership with ISU and the students get a chance to spend one week on campus and learn STEM projects and a host of other programs. Our after-school program is a great way to provide children with a safe and engaging environment after school hours. This program offers homework help, building friendships, developing new skills, and having fun. We also provide an after-school snack, mentoring sessions, as well as support from trained staff and volunteers. For more information please call the office at 309-829-4807
The mentoring program is incorporated into our afterschool program and in our youth sports. WACC takes the time to separate the youth by genders and discuss life skills, building confidence, and setting goals. Mentoring groups gives the youth a voice and offer opportunities for self-discovery. Collaborations with many community partners advise the members on all important topics such as proper etiquette, hygiene, healthy eating, and self-respect.
